Don't quote me, as these are just some notes that I took while installing this today... it is working very well, by the way :-)

add the 'nagios' group to /etc/group

use vipw to add a 'nagios' user

download and extract the archives
cd /usr/local/src
<fetch the nagios & plugins archive; extract them>

cd /usr/local/src/nagios/nagios-1.0
make clean
./configure --with-gd-lib=/usr/local/lib/ --with-gd-inc=/usr/local/include/gd/
make all
make install
make install-init
make install-config

cd ../nagios-plugins....
make all
make install

add this stuff to your apache httpd.conf file
ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin/ /usr/local/nagios/sbin/
<Directory "/usr/local/nagios/sbin/">
AllowOverride All
Options ExecCGI
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

Alias /nagios/ /usr/local/nagios/share/
<Directory "/usr/local/nagios/share">
Options None
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

create the password auth file for the nagios site
htpasswd -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/cgi-auth-file michael

make sure that your .htaccess file is in both of these directories
